Artistry Fighting Poverty: Instruments of Joy Benefit Concert Recap

Last Friday, Instruments of Joy hosted a benefit concert, raising funds and awareness to serve musicians in need. Not only did we experience the excellent musicianship of Phil Keaggy, Audrey Assad, and Buddy Greene, but our supporters showed up in a big way! Thanks to the 350 guests in attendance, the concert and silent auction collectively raised more than $23,000! These funds will go such a long way in helping Instruments of Joy fulfill our mission of providing quality musical instruments to musicians in need.
Toward the end of the concert, our founder Joshua MacLeod shared a passage from Matthew 14. He expressed Jesus’s compassion for the multitudes and the importance of seeking God for how each of us can help, using the resources we already have. MacLeod then left the concert-goers with three major take-aways:
  • Will you join with Christ in compassion for the multitudes?
  • What would you do if Jesus instructed you, “…You give them something to eat!”?
  • Are you willing to use the tools and gifts you already have to serve? 

Being an Instrument of Joy

Here’s an example of one of our IOJ Crew members using his talents to serve musicians in need! Steve Miller started a company called Rider Percussion that builds drums. The cajon drum in the photo below was hand crafted by and then donated by Steve to this wonderful person Tanguy from Benin Africa.

The Republic of Benin sits on the other side of the world, tucked between Nigeria and Togo in West Africa. It goes seemingly unnoticed by the western world, and yet it is home to 8.8 million people. A tumultuous history and underdeveloped economy are just a few of the struggles the people have faced here.

Today there is at least one man who has experienced the hope that the gift of music can bring. Because of Steve, Tanguy will now be able to grow his drumming skills and experience the joy of music in a new way.  He also plans on using his drum for outreach and service projects in surrounding villages.
